LAS VEGAS GOSSIP
-from the Awesome 1 for March 2003
Oh, this month the trash has hit the fan!
Starting with the Rio who on Wednesday axed all 80 of the sexiest, kindest cocktail waitresses. I got an email from friend Julie who has paraded with free cocktails for over 13 years, making sure her body is pleasing to customers who come just for a look sooner than free booze. The gals are non-union & never guessed that the casino would want what they term "Bevertainers". These servers will sing & dance as they bring beverage to you. Next to coinless machines that need a Muzak to play coins falling, someone singing in my ear while I am going for a Royal won't make it. When MGM Grand first opened, they had coinless slots & what a pain waiting to turn in a piece of paper for $$$. A far cry from lugging a cup of coins over to a new casino when the ones you've played went cold.
Back at the Aladdin front, latest go-getters are oil tycoon Marvis Davis who lost his bid for the Desert Inn to Steve Wynn. Then as I predicted last month, Starwood Resorts, former owners of DI & Caesers Palace, are rumor to be making a go to open the Sheraton/Planet Hollyood Resort & Casino. I was told the new selling price is $350 mil! No word on Michael Flatley's bid which caught my eye last summer. But the accounting firms are amazed that Aladdin is making money in the recent months. Can it pull out of bankruptcy? Then we also have another soul back in town to buy something, why not Aladdin? Michael Jackson was seen on Pecos Road eyeing the Sultan of Brunei's estate, which he has reportedly been making inquiries about buying. Didn't know the Sultan was selling.
Palms has added a new ciche to its evergrowing additions, maybe getting a new reality TV show there........THE BACHELOR PAD! Actually they have added 2 suites that are fixed up to host bachelor parties like no other resort. Up on 28, celebrities have flocked to rent it out just to escape. It comes with retro 60's design including stripper poles, plasma screen tv's, a killer sound system, a wooden dance floor with mirrored walls & disco ball, and yes even pull out beds for anyone needing one. Interested? How about $5K a night!
Down the street we have Phil Ruffin, who has gotten plenty of press including me, over his San Francisco themed resort & a 50 story condo with Donald Trump. So far we are stuck with the stink bomb Frontier since the poor man can't get a loan with his bad credit. Give up already after 3 years of talk & no action. Hire a good cleaning crew to clean up the place, even walking by can make your tummy want to do bad things. Or better yet, sell it to The Donald so he can build a plush cozy well run resort.
Strange things continue at the Hard Rock. How about losing your President. Another email spy tell's me Don Marrandino ran not walked out in just two days after breaking the news to Peter Morton that he was joining Steve Wynn's Le Reve project as Executive Vice President and General Manager of Wynn Resorts Ltd. MGM Grand will also be losing prime folks back to the old Mirage Resorts roots. I think you already can name a few...
I got more TV goodies for you. This one to pick up the "Joe Millionaire" folks with a new show being filmed at the Aladdin & ready to air March 10th on Fox. The title is "Married by America," and this is the marriage capital of the world. The home audience makes the final decision on who marries whom, sight unseen. Friends and family help narrow the field.
Folks are always complaining on the X-rated Magazine peddlers & timeshare salesmen but now we have another new addition who have housed themselves at the Venetian. The MRC Group entertainment testing lab. Last week, the Las Vegas-based research company started churning visitors through to test reactions to television pilots, commercials and movies for Hollywood producers and TV cable networks. This is a great cross sectioning of visitors to Las Vegas. The testing productions at a rate of more than one a day, sampling the views of up to 600 visitors daily as a cross sample of America. We know the Venetian is make a pretty penny with this & why not get other market research firms to bring their offices to Las Vegas, even at the Venetian. With the Guggenheim gone there is plenty of space to test away & give the panalists some gambling cash.
Yes construction workers are clammoring to Las Vegas with all the new additions going on. The latest: Mandalay Bay with its 1,125-suite hotel tower between the property's theater and parking garage. They just opened a new convention center which is a hit & they are edging closer to MGM Grand's 5000 room top honor. Mandalay Bay will be at 4825. Can't add another floor to top 5000???? Everyone join me & call them up to grow with class! Sometime in March Park Place is to make up their minds if they will add another tower of suites to Caesars.
Had a few folks on a newsgroup I frequent for frequent fliers ask me about a new hotel. The Westin Casuarina Casino in Las Vegas. It is just a new name for the Maxim with its 7th owner since it went bankrupt 3 years ago. We wish the Westin chain luck with this old dog on Flamingo. Another strange happening with Hilton Hotels aka Park Place who own Paris/Ballys, Caesars, LV Hilton & plenty of timeshares growing around town. People who stayed at Caesars & are Hilton Honor members & charge their stay to their HH AMEX card are to get major points towards another free stay at any Hilton property. So when they hand their cards to the desk clerk at Caesars, they are told they give STARWOOD POINTS only. Excuse me, but Starwood sold Caesars to Hilton in '99, so why are they still there?
Another new casino for the rich bitches at Lake Las Vegas' Ritz Carlton. The $60 mil Casino Montelago has started contruction at the hotel. We also have the return of Dan Reichartz, former Caesars Palace president and a 50 percent owner of the casino management company that will operate the Casino Montelago for owners Cook Inlet Region, an Alaska-based tribal investment arm. Did you think the Ritz could get a gaming license? So now Las Vegas suburb has its first tribal casino with more on the way. Remember the Hyatt's try in Summerlin? With a scheduled April opening, we will see. Locals do not care for the snooty feel.
To close, get your nose working as we check out the latest rumor: The closing of Wet n Wild???? A nasty rumor has the Sahara's new owner booting the water park out to build a LAKE! Surrounding it will be a timeshare, the Voyagers Hotel/Casino & a yacht club for boaters to cruise the lake? And that isn't all. How about a 12 story Ferris Wheel??? Sorry but from what I remember walking by it, that will be pretty small lake with putt putt boats maybe for kids. So will the Sahara fall & the land that has been vacant across the street the entire time William Bennet owned it will be the timeshare, the Sahara site tunred into the Voyagers & Wet n Wild, the lake??? Pretty dumb to me. What do you think. Join me in my Forum AFTER HOURS to discuss anything I talk about here.

LAS VEGAS GOSSIP
-from the Awesome 1 for Febuary 2003:
A GameMaster CONGRATULATIONS to Wayne Newton for performing is 25,000 show on Wednesday 1/15/03. Quite amazing that none of his groupies knew of the monumental night, he had to tell them & wait for applause. Guess it is time for Wayne to stop the shoe polish on his head & act his real age....

With the new year, I hope for great prosperity for you & me along with our favorite city. After the loss of 2 who made Las Vegas what it is: Bill Bennett (Mr. Circus Circus & creator of SPEED at his Sahara) and the Nazi lover, as many grew to know him, Ralph Engelstad . But the 2 combined brains to create the Las Vegas Speedway giving Las Vegas a new avenue of entertainment & worldwide acclaim. They will be missed. WB Stage 16 closed at the Venetian after a 3 year life. To me, no major loss....... Then over at the Aladdin, The Blue Note closed its doors on Wednesday night telling its workers & the performers that they had been sold. Rumor has it that the owners have a restaurant/club named Ibeza and are advertising in the mall confusing many locals who saw no coming soon sign in Desert Passage Mall for this new restaurant. So we know where it is going don't we!
Everyone loves good Las Vegas TV shows, well you are going to be enjoying the new ad campaign, that the Super Bowl stated was too seedy to air. "Las Vegas Stories" is the title of the new Las Vegas ad campaign with everyone from a beautiful female picking up her limo driver, another ad with a bunch of dudes eating breakfast after one hell of a night. Ads are aimed at both men & women, not really couples. Guess they are shedding the "family" image. I've seen 4 of them on CNN, so check them out. Then we have NBC's "Fear Factor" which is taping in Las Vegas with a stunt that the contestants have to CLIMB THE LUXOR! Yes, they will be on ropes & pullies as they walk to the light at the top & then slide down. I sent an email to NBC to say WHY NOT THE STRAT! People jump from it, why not climb to the 113 story top. Heard they also got a gourmet specialty at Mandalay Bay as well as a FSE feat. This is a show I have to watch, then we'll chat on my forum - AFTER HOURS.
I just received a Planet Hollywood Commemorative Sweatshirt celebrating 20 years of ROCKY! So whomever knows I adore Rocky, as well as boxing and got me this great present - THANK YOU! Arnie, Sly, GameMaster????
Can't wait for "Rocky 6".
Playgirl magazine landed a Las Vegas hunk! No not Lance Burton or the Amazing Jonathon, but Kerry Simon, chef and co-owner of Simon Kitchen & Bar at the Hard Rock Hotel. Oh yes, gals you know who I am referring to, if you've been to his restaurant. His ice cream cream desert melt as he walks it out to your table just from his steamy ways. So save your $$$ for the April issue of Playgirl.
What's this, the Venetian and the Guggenheim Museum have closed "The Art of Motorcycles!" And no new exhibit to replace it? DAH! Is it bad planning or a massive, very expensive attractor that didn't attrack anyone as the Art Museum at Bellagio, who has the Andy Warhol's exhibit, does. Now they are talking Broadway??? They better get J.Lo to bring "Madre" there since she needs plenty of room for the seperate dining rooms for the Hollywood moguls that frequent her LA establishment. Each has large meeting or small date tables, curtained to prevent papparazzi or walled in to prevent voice leakage to the Press. But I feel down on the Hard Rock, if it doesn't close The Joint to accomodate her & add on to it, won't get it. As far as the Joint, I have called & called & Morton isn't talking but various folks agree that one performance a month speaks problems. With the LVFD doing a walk thru of the Who concert that held more than allowed, so a nice fine & usually a closure too. Only act isn't til February 22 called "Queens of the Stone Age" & then it is an act a month? Something smells like a loser. I doubt that after NYE gig & all the pukers, a good cleaning & disinfecting would take over a month to do. But I do hate rumors & am trying to get some facts since The Joint has been a money maker & worldwide folks visiting for performances as well as Professional Boxing. UNLV right across the street has it as their hang out too. People forget Las Vegas is a COLLEGE TOWN! So I wait for Lopez to email me with what is happening so you get the exclusive!
For those planning a visit to Bellagio, or those already checked in that are hearing plenty of havoc, that is the new construction of a 925-room tower will be built on the south side of the main pool
and courtyard at the 3,005-room Bellagio. In addition to the new rooms, they are getting 60,000 square feet of meeting space, 5,000 square feet of retail space, another gourmet restaurant again maybe J.Lo, since I am not getting emails from her telling me who the winner is, just that she is still in meeting in Las Vegas. Also a new Bellagio spa and salon. Then that growing structure at Venetian is their new 1000 room tower atop the parking garage. What ever happened to Sheldon's 6000 room Venetian/Lido towers? Before the Sands went BOOM, he put out press releases with an artist's rendering of his new resort, which was to be the world's largest hotel at 6000 suites, not just rooms. Then he only built one tower. So Las Vegas should be about 140,000 rooms soon. Then in 2005 La Reve adds to that with their new golf course 2 a Ferrari & Mazzurati dealerships (a casino/resort first). I am also hearing Wynn's Mountain with waterfalls & massive lake, so we will see unless he emails me with details. I'm waiting Steve as I know you read me as does Carl.... and yes, you are seeing Le Reve marque going up.....
Many inquired about Cirque du Soleil's growing appearances in Las Vegas. From 2 shows ("O" & "Mystere") to 6 by 2005. An overkill? Maybe, but maybe not after I emailed Chantal Cote, their publicist. So here I have cut & pasted her response for you to read:
1. First show will be presented at the NY NY Hotel theatre starting July 2003. It will take a fresh look at traditional music hall shows. Sensual, exotic and provocative, the show will feature a blend of dance, humor and acrobatics. The theatre of the New York-New York hotel will be rebuilt to house the show in 2003.
2. The second show will open in 2004 at the MGM Grand Hotel theatre. This second project will shake the spectator's perception of space, conception of the law of gravity, and comprehension of the world in three dimensions.
It is too soon to disclose any more information related to the concept of these two shows as they both are in development right now. Their names have not been chosen yet and won't be before two months or so prior to opening night.
Thank you for your interest. I will keep you posted......

Attachée de presse
Another piece of NEW for Las Vegas is Celine Dion & her show "A NEW DAY" & her store where you can purchase everything that bears her name from CDs to clothes. Ceasars is quite the place til opening day with rehearsals in the new **Colosseum** & making the coustics perfect! Just in from Belgium where the cast & Celine constructed the show, one that will leave you in amazement. After four months of intensive workshops in La Louviere, Belgium with Franco Dragone, creator of Cirque du Soleil as your Mentor, piecing each part of this massive puzzle to be the backdrop the the Voice of Titanic. It premieres March 25th to a sold out audience with sixty international dancers, musicians and artists chosen from thousands through auditions held in Montreal, London, Paris, Amsterdam, New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Chicago and La Louviere, Belgium in June. Credits will include: Yves Aucoin, Lighting Designer; Pavel Brun, Associate Director; Michel Crete, Set Designer and Projection Content Designer; Dirk Decloedt, Projection Content Designer; Claude (Mego) Lemay, Musical Director; Dominique Lemieux, Costume Designer; Mia Michaels, Choreographer; and Denis Savage, Sound Designer. I thank Chantal for our mini Playbill.
MGM Mirage has finally found a replacement for that disaster of a fake Disneyland at the Grand. Turnberry Place Condos, right down LV Blvd over to Paradise & down to Riviera, replacing that eyesore of COUNTRYLAND USA for years that was El Rancho & now is a 4 skyscraper $600 million condominium project. Well they are doing another where the old amusement park was. 6 40 story structures will grow from the 115 acres there. A hotel may be included but no gaming license as yet, but we know how that can change.... This will be a timeshare heaven going for $350K to $1 mil. 6 pools, many high price restaurants, spas, even butlers & servants are at your call. Groundbreaking this summer, and sales folks are ready for deposits before anything even happens. Will MGM change their mind on this fiasco???
With bankruptcy a key word thoughout 2002 from National & United to Enron, well I have a reverse announcement. PLANET HOLLYWOOD emerges successfully from its 2 year Chapter 11 ride. Gone are Demi Moore & Steven Segal. Key operators Arnold Schwarzenegger & Bruce Willis now have new partners: Kevin Bacon and Matt Damon. They are focusing on strengthening its brand at its remaining 10 restaurants in tourist destinations such as Atlantic City; Hawaii; Las Vegas; Minnesota's Mall of America; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; New York, Orlando, Fla.; London, Paris and Disneyland Paris. It ended its Lake Tahoe lease. Down from 945 restaurants in 31 countries. Las Vegas wins as #1 locations with the largest store and the restaurant will be getting a new menu & at least 6 appearances a year from a movie star, according to the company's leases. Oscar De La Hoya is their #1 party thrower after each of his fights whether win or lose. So they make a profit when he's in town.
Now go back to 1996 to the North of Desert Inn with Bruce, Arnold, Demi & Steve with shovels announcing the Planet Hollywood Casino/Resort. Will 2003 bring the new 4-some with a new announcement, maybe taking over Aladdin??? Still no news from Bankruptcy Court on any new takers but they are making money since November....... will Aladdin come out winners????
Is sports your bag and you want some when you visit Las Vegas? Yes XFL is gone eventho Las Vegas was a sellout for each game. Well I have news for you. Thomas & Mack just sent out a press release on winning the new location for Arena Football's New Jersey Gladiators in 2003. And The Orleans, which is expected to open a 9,000-seat arena next spring, also was interested in an Arena Football team. I got the name Michael, how about The Las Vegas WHALES!
Looking for a job? Steve Wynn has hired as his Mirage head honcho Arte Nathan, a man all the employees loved to come to work for. He expects to be interviewing over 100,000 people for Le Reve's 8000 jobs as well as 2500 for his Macau resort he is building. He already has a staff at Wynn Resorts of 250 getting everything in order for both resorts in both countries. He wants an even more professional staff than he had a Mirage Resorts that knew how to welcome everyone to their "home away from homee". Whether a whale or a vacationer, you felt special at any Mirage Resort. But you & I both know that Le Reve is a Whale's Heaven but we will not be banned with jeans & T's since all money is accepted at tables as well as machines. Maybe all the Asians will go to Macau since they have experience & speak the language & our Kenny's dreams will come true! You already see construction of the 47 story hotel & parking garage. Spring 2005 is grand opening & I know Steve, he is an early bird!
Now to close with a SOUR NOTE by Celine Dion who sold naming rights to her Caesars Palace show "A New Day" to CHRYSLER! So you will see car ads all over, on programs, cars in the lobby, etc. Even her sign outside Caesars which blocks Mirage's Siegfried & Roy signage will say CHRYSLER bigger than Celine Dion. I personally knew something was up when I keep seeing her promoting their cars at car shows, on ads, etc.
But that the key word: MONEY! Thanks to Ginny who sent me a note that Celine purchased the vacant lot $2.6 mil on her street to build her heliport to take her to work. Neighbors are headed to court to stop it as it will destroy their peace & quiet. What limos aren't fast enough?

LAS VEGAS GOSSIP
-from the Awesome 1 for January 2003
Well here we are
together again, hanging out at an empty craps table with a few shots & a beer, about to learn the latest from Sin City. Funny how we grow, as folks overhear interesting tidbits of news that a casino host may drop, or a dealer, or even a casino owner. So let's get talking on the latest curse or celebration hitting Las Vegas.
#1 as I put it, is a biggie what with its location and all it had to offer when it opened August 2000. The Aladdin, being part of Chaper 11 for over a year, with everyone from Carl Icahn to former Mirage Resorts officials with their new companies as top contenders. But it is a sicko in the gaming world, does it have a curse on it? Everything imaginable since day 1 has gone wrong. London Clubs, who was the first Whales Heaven, lost billions & was the first to get out. Immediate competition from Bellagio, Caesars & now Mandalay Bay will keep the whales happy. Then the mall changes hands in ownership & I admit I am addicted to the thunderstorms more than Forum Shops statues, who also have told me another expansion at Caesars is ready to get going.
So now I learn we have a boxing match at Bankruptcy Court for 2 new contenders. In this corner is a top executive at The Venetian named David Friedman, & the other corner is a time-share developer Ian Bruce Eichner. So we wait til end of January to see who pulls out or gets knocked out. I personally doubt either will get it. Let's do some talking on
my Forum, since I have the area with the GameMaster's gaming talk, so stop by & heat up the place.
Restaurants will be getting some action with 2 newbies that I predict will set Las Vegas afire with media coverage as well as lines of folks ready to sample the goods. Dear CHARO, just closed Sahara's Congo Room, and for some unknown reason is opening a new Latin restaurant and
nightclub "Sevilla" inside Desert Passage at the Aladdin on Jan. 15.
Then if that isn't hot enough, we have JaLo hitting town, maybe for a wedding to Ben Affleck, but she is meeting with MGM, Bellagio, NYNY, Mandalay Bay and a few others for her restaurant "Madre" named by Ben & run by her first husband. The LA latin themed restaurant needed the expansion to unclug the freeway system in LA with folks coming to her door. She also has a new clothing line that Forum Shops met with her during their last visit, on getting her store there.
Then after 4 years of FOR SALE ads in the WSJ, Jackie Gaughan finally sold all but his home (El Cortez). After the death of Jackie Jr in November, and Michael is just too busy with his creations to tackle downtown, so the 82 year old Jackie Sr agreed to sell his 4 downtown casinos for $82 million (a steal!) Barrick Gaming announced they plan to buy the Gold Spike, Western Hotel, Las Vegas Club and the Plaza pending approval by Nevada gaming regulators. After 60 years of work, Jackie deserves some fun time!
Now a bit of a downside for many men who read me as I announce a GAMEMASTER CONGRATULATIONS to Sheena Easton who is now Mrs. John Minoli. She will be looking better than ever as John is a top Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. They were married in Las Vegas last month. So while he is cutting & dicing, she is back at the Nighclub at the LV Hilton. Will he move to Las Vegas??? Just working on the CRAZY GIRLS could keep him wealthy.
In closing til February or talks on my Forum "AFTER HOURS", I have a strange feeling about a favorite hang out for boxing & great groups. THE JOINT. I call Hard Rock for acts for January 2003 & they tell me they may close the place!!!!! I let them know right away that that would be a drastic mistake as The Joint is known worldwide, a place to get off the strip, away from crowds & enjoy themselves for the evening, maybe even get a room.
You know boxing is my #1 sport. I am a bit laid back since the loss of my dear friend, who I miss, Mitch Halprin. But learned that Nevada not only won't let Mike Tyson play games in town anymore, but after so many deaths of boxers this year, they have instituted an addition test before a fight along with the pre-fight physical. A MRI scan of their brain of each fighter scheduled to fight in Nevada. After the first of the year, with the pre-fight physical, the MRI scan must show no abnormalities and is good for 5 years. I applaude Commissioner Marc Ratner for this & Dr Flip Homansky for protecting these kids. Remember you cannot fight if you are over 40 either, that was passed last year. So no more Foreman in Nevada. I AM ALSO LOOKING FOR A BOXER TO PUT "GMO" ON HIS TRUNKS. Stop at my Forum if you want to do it.......
If you know Tom Bonanne, a casino host at Paris Las Vegas and Bally's, you better get another since he is history. The jerk borrowed $250K from a high roller & failed to pay. So the whale returns looking for him & execs learn of the lawbreaker, so has the Gaming Commission who could pull the license of the resort. So keep a close ear on this one.
Wayne Newton spent an interesting Thanksgiving entertaining troops in
Bahrain & Kuwait. He had great company: comedian Paul Rodriguez and country singer Neal McCoy & the most requested act in 49 USO trips to visit troops: the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. This will be the 49th USO tour for members of the cheerleading squad in 25 years.
May I invite you to visit any Circuit City in your neighborhood & join me in a greeting to those who are away from family & friends to fight a possible war, again. I had a great time showing them who THE AWESOME 1 is & with their gifts of laptop computers from CC & manufacturers, they can join us here on GameMasteronline.com. You just never know where I will show up from my Top 10 Las Vegas bathrooms to a holiday greeting to a boxing radio show, I will be there.
See you next month, or at the Forum ;-)
