Hand Plays from the Front Page for 3/29/98

The game is 10/7 Double Bonus. This is a hand that a lot of beginners to the game miss. The 'knee-jerk' reaction is to go for the royal, but the Ace is the proper play. Here are the numbers:

Hold A only: 2.2608
Hold 10,K: 2.2270

Hand Plays from the Front Page for 3/22/98

The game is 9/6 Jacks with a 5000-coin royal. Normally, the proper play is to hold only the Ace, but with the royal at 5000 coins, it's worthwhile to hold the A-10 suited. This hand forms the basis of a (in all modesty) SUPER article entitled 'Basic Strategy Variations' for 9/6 Jacks or Better video poker which you can find on the top of this page. Here are the numbers for this hand:

Hold A only: 2.3201
Hold A-10: 2.3645

Hand Plays from the Front Page for 3/14/98

The game is Double Bonus Poker in the 'short-pay' format where the Full House pays 45 for 5. A lot of these are out there and, while they return only 99.1% long term, I know a lot of you play them. The strategy for the 'full-pay' version (50 for 5 on the F.H.) is to not break up the two-pair in order to draw to the two Aces, but in this format, it's the correct play. Here are the numbers:

Hold A,A: 8.7653
Hold two-pair 8.4043

Hand Plays from the Front Page for 3/1/98

The game is 9/6 Jacks or Better with a 4000-coin Royal. Tens suited with high card can create some confusion; it's not automatically the right play. Here we have a 'penalty' discard in the 3 of diamonds. It cuts down the flush possibilities, making King, Jack the proper play. Here are the numbers:

Hold J,K: 2.4308
Hold 10,J: 2.4206

If the 3 was not a diamond, the 10,J number would be 2.5039.

Hand Plays from the Front Page for 2/23/98

The game is 9/6 Jacks or Better with a 4000-coin Royal. The 'normal' play is to break a four-card flush to draw to a three-card Royal, but this is a special case. The Jack is a 'penalty' card and the presence of the 10 make the flush a better play. Here are the numbers:

Hold 4 diamonds: 6.3830
Hold 10, K, A: 6.3460

If the Jack was a 5, the numbers would look like this:
Hold 10, K, A: 6.4339
Hold 4 diamonds: 6.3830
