Hand Plays for the Front page for 9/27/98

The game is 8/5 Jacks or Better with a 9000-coin Royal

Normally, an inside straight flush draw is the better play, but in this game which is, incidentally, at its 100% return level, the three-card Royal is the correct play. Here are the numbers:
Hold 10, J, Q: 11.6050
Hold 4 diamonds: 11.4894

Hand Plays for the Front page for 9/20/98

The game is 10/7 Double Bonus poker with a 4000-coin Royal.

A lot of people overlook the possible straight flushes they are dealt, especially when a 2-card Royal play is the alternative. In this game, the Royal is the way to go, but if it was an inside SF, instead of a double inside SF, then it wouldn't be. Here are the numbers:
Hold 10, Q: 2.3953
Hold 3 diamonds: 2.3497

Hand Plays for the Front page for 9/13/98

The game is 9/6 Jacks with a 10,000-coin Royal.

Yes, games with Royals that high can be found. I played one last week for quite a few hours, but didn't get it. Anyway, I was dealt this hand and went for the Royal, though that was a slight mistake. Had the Royal been at 10,200 coins, holding the three diamonds would have been the correct play. Here are the numbers:
Hold 2-pair: 12.9787
Hold 3-card Royal: 12.7243

Hand Plays for the Front page for 8/30/98

The game is 9/6 Jacks or Better with a 7000-coin Royal

Oh, how I wanted to go for the Royal on this hand! It was at $7200 on a dollar machine the other night, but luckily I knew the straight flush was the proper play. I didn't get it, but look at the size of a mistake. Here are the numbers:
Hold J,Q: 3.0444 Hold 3 diamonds: 3.5939

Hand Plays for the Front page for 8/23/98

The game is 10/7 Double Bonus Poker with a 4000-coin Royal.

The 'knee-jerk' reaction to a hand like this is, for many of you, to hold just the Ace, because it pays 800 for 5. But, there's a 'penalty' card here in the form of a 7 of diamonds. Because you'll be discarding that, the proper play is hold the Ace and the Jack. The reason is that the loss of one diamond reduces the chances for a flush enough to make holding just the Ace an incorrect play. If you weren't discarding any diamonds, holding the Ace alone would be the proper play. Here are the numbers:
Hold A, J: 2.2467
Hold A only: 2.2427
