The Las Vegas Dealer
for 12/1/99
The Las Vegas Quiz--THE ANSWERS
A few months ago we came up with a little quiz for
you. Here are the answers. If nothing else, it
will give you something to talk about while standing
in the buffet line.
Also we had NO WINNER!
1. Who invented the slot machine?
A Bavarian immigrant, Charles Fey, invented the slot
machine in 1887, while he was living in San Francisco,
California.
2. What is the difference between betting the Big 6
and placing the 6 on the craps table.
The Big 6 is an even money bet while placing the 6
pays 7-6.
3. What is the average horsepower of the electric
motors that spin roulette wheels in Las Vegas?
Motors or other mechanical devises are not used to
spin the wheels. The wheels are all very well
balanced and move with very little resistance or
friction; they are spun by the dealer's hand.
4. What is the game that was once called the
"Chinese Lottery"?
It is now called Keno.
5. If a gambling game (e.g. Keno or Caribbean Stud)
has $100,000 aggregate per game, what does that
mean?
The total pay out for each game will only total
$100,000 even if more is indicated, such as two Keno
tickets held for the same game that are scheduled to
pay $75,000 each.
6. Asking the name of the hotel where Dan Tanna hung
out would be too easy. What fictional Las Vegas
hotel was owned by the nemesis of Mike Torello.
From the TV series Crime Story, it was the Lucky
Lady. The late Landmark Hotel and Casino was used in
some of its exterior shots.
7. Which counties in Nevada have not exercised their
local option to have legal prostitution?
Clark (Las Vegas) and Washoe County (Reno).
8. Which city is farthest west, Reno or Los
Angeles?
Reno
9. What is the object of Fan Tan?
A player bets on how many beads (buttons, pebbles,
seeds, etc.) are left: 1, 2, 3 or 4.
10. Who are the primary users of the National Daily
Reporter?
Bookmakers use it as a guide to set the odds for
horse race betting.
11. What would be betting on if you were using the
Western Line.
This is a betting line for baseball used by
bookmakers. The Dodgers and Giants are playing and
the Dodgers are the favored team. With a line of 8
to 7 you would have to wager $8 to win $10 on the
Giants (underdog team) or $10 to win $7 on the Dodgers
(favored team).
12. What are you betting on if you make a "place
bet"?
You are betting a number will come in on the craps
table or that a race horse will come in 2nd, as in
Win,
Place or Show.
BONUS QUESTION:
What is an astragalus and why is it part of this
quiz?
Prehistoric people played a game with a sheep's
ankle bone. This bone had six sides and is thought to
be the first die, as in, "roll them bones." Without
it
we might not have craps as we know it today.
