Interview with
Paul McKinney
Paul McKinney
Hometown: Princetown,
WV/Kingsport, TN
Age: 75
Paul does not read from books. All the poker books
that are out seem to "teach everything I know."
He likes playing in Las Vegas over AC. In Vegas
you "Can play over players that are gone to eat."
Also, the variety of high games.
McKinney hates obnoxious players who "don't act
proper." Has never cussed or thrown cards at a dealer.
First attempt to pay in a poker tournament: 5th
Place - 1996 United States Poker Championship
championship event. Finished 6th in 1998 to become, so
far, the only player to have finished in both
USPC Championship tournament held atump Taj
MahalAC. He finished 5th in the 1999 Rio
Carnivale of Poker $1000. stud 8-or-better,
finish sixth at the 1996 Foxwoods Seven Card
Stud tournament.
Started playing before he joined Navy in 1943
(VET-PACIFICWWII). He was assigned to the USS
Barnes for 2-1/2 years. As legend has called it,
the "old Army game", seven card stud, was also
popular on some Navy "buckets" in WWII. His games are:
No limit deuces-wild and no limit five card stud. His
rank was Merchant Mate Class III.
McKinney said this in 1998 about this years 1999
World Series of Poker: Feels although much
shorter, the action will be better in both
tournament and "live" play." He likes the two-day
poker tournament format(although I did see Paul after
he qualified for the $1000 Seven Card Stud 8-or-Better
at 245 am, playing 13 hours, jumped up and played in a
satellite. I couldn't believe my eyes.). He was
right!

I
have never seen Paul without his grandsons, David and
Mike. They are really good boy's. They worry about
Paul so much, its hearts the heart. They are good
friends
of mine now, and so is Paul. They told me that in
the 1998 USPC9 tournament, Paul was down to two
tables, Jack McClelland called a 10 minute "potty"
break. When play resumes the boys walked into the
tournament area and saw the action had resumed.
WITHOUT
GRANDPA!! They went to the rest room. NO GRANDPA!
Hmmmm...! Mike looked out into the large tournament
area. THERE'S GRANDPA!! Paul had jumped into a $15-$30
stud game real quick, heh.
Paul and Mike came to
my house to record the above interview which featured
on The Poker Show in April 1999. - Click]
Paul has
another grandson, Josh McKinney, that holds the
all-time scoring record in the Para-Olympics.
