Casino Comps: Comp Cadger?
by Paul Enockson

I've often wondered what you call a person that is good at getting comps. Almost everyone has a title and in some cases a slang expression to describe what they do, or in some cases don't do. So what do you call someone who becomes good at getting comps?

Someone who is good at music is a musician, an individual who is good at technical things is a technician, a person who goes into politics becomes a politician, one who performs magic is a magician, beautician's, physician's, clinician's, electrician's but a "compician?", I think not.

We have farmer's, barber's, carpenter's, builder's, banker's, programmer's (those computer guys), broker's, plumber's, teacher's, painter's, printer's, manager's, planner's, reporters, writers, a butcher, a baker, a candle stick maker, but no "comper!"

There's dentist's, pharmacist's, economist's, cosmetologist's, artist's, scientist's, biologist's, typist's, therapists and a host of other "ist's", but no "compist's."

I can find administrator's, auditor's, operator's, coordinator's, inspector's, counselor's, supervisor's, and inspector's, but no "compor's!"

So what do we call ourselves? In all that I've read and written about comps I have never seen any reference to what you call some who is good at getting comps. In fact, I really couldn't find much on how to get good at getting comps. That's why I decided to write Casino Comp Basics - A Casino Comp Manual For The $10 And Up Bettor. This manual is NOT a major literary work. It is simply a small handbook designed to help teach you how SAVE money on each and every trip you take to the major gambling locations.

Now I'm not talking about a person that goes to Las Vegas or Atlantic City and throws around money like it has no value, we've all seen people like that. We probably all have our own names for those "high rollers" that appear to have an unlimited supply of money. The thought that always goes through my mind is "I wish I had your money and ...". You can fill in your own thoughts.

No, I'm talking about the person that learns all they can about the comp system with the goal of getting more in comps than they expect to lose at the tables or slots. These are the $10 table game bettors and the 25 cent slot players who come to gamble and have a good time, and in the process get the most for their money. To me, that's the essence of the "comp cadger!"

My Webster's New World Dictionary defines cadging , cadger as "... to get by begging; sponge." Now you may tell me that when you ask for a comp that you're not begging, or that you're not being a sponge. However, are we not attempting to "soak up" all we can from the casinos, turn the tables on them, get more for our money, use every advantage we can to come out on top at the end of a trip? I think so!

So, if we're not "comp cadger's", what do we call ourselves? Compers, compist's, compor's, compician's? I vote for Comp Cadger! Just call me a Paul Enockson, Comp Cadger, cause I wanna soak up all the comp's I can!

Tip for the Month: Ask for a comp when things are busy in the casinos. Chances are you'll get a comp easier when they're busy because it's harder to keep track of how long you've been there. Only use this technique when you haven't "logged" in with a players card.

And remember, "When you know how it's easy."
