The "Bibles" Revised
In the late 1980's two professional poker players made a
decision that would, I believe, lead directly to much of
the increased popularity of poker today. These players had
developed extensive notes about how to play both Texas
Hold'em and, along with a third professional, seven card
stud. They decided to share this information with the rest
of the world. These players were David Sklansky, Mason
Malmuth and Ray Zee. The result of their various
collaborations was the landmark books Hold'em Poker for
Advanced Players (1988) and Seven Card Stud for
Advanced Players (1989).
Over the years both books have undergone minor revisions,
but as the millenium approached, the authors realized that
the games had changed enough (or become popular enough) that
some major updates were in order. Thus, a few days ago, Two
Plus Two Publishing announced 21st century editions of both
Hold'em Poker
for Advanced Players and
Seven Card
Stud for Advanced Players.
As already stated, these are not minor revisions. There is
over 100 pages of new material in each book. Even better, the
books are indexed for the first time! New subjects covered
in the Hold'em book include extensive sections on "loose" and
"short-handed" games. The stud book also has an extensive
section of "loose" games. Of course, much of the existing
material has been updated and revised as well.
The books have been out only a few days, and already a
phenomenal number have been sold by my company, ConJelCo,
alone. I have not had time to do more than page through each
of the books, but I can confidently recommend these new
editions to the readers of GameMasterOnline:
Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players (21st Century Edition) by
David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth, 332p (paper), ISBN 1-880685-22-1.
Seven Card Stud for Advanced Players (21st Century Edition)
by David Sklansky, Mason Malmuth, and Ray Zee, 326p (paper),
ISBN 1-880685-23-X.
