Hello there,
I've been going through your "Blackjack School" at www.blackjack.com. Fantastic!! Fun and interesting. Very professional.

Thanks for the kind words. Be sure to visit my other free lessons which are on the Blackjack Page of my web site.

Some questions have arisen, though. Firstly, I've noticed differences between the BS Charts generated by the Engine, and Revere's Charts ("Blackjack as Business"). Example: Single Deck, H17, DA2. Revere says NOT to split 9,9 against a Dealer Ace. The engine produces a chart that says you should. Typo? Should I always treat Revere's words as gospel, or the the Engine's charts 100% accurate?

It's a close call, either way, but it appears that the BJ Strategy engine has an error.

Secondly, with the same rules listed above, Revere treats different combinations resulting in "8" in different manners (eg. a hand of 6,2 iis always Hit, while 5,3 is doubled against Dealer's 5,6). the Engine treats all hard hands which total 8 in the same way.

Those 'specific card' hands are refinements which one may add, if desired. The strategy engine treats all 8s as the same.

Lastly, I am confused by the math behind a "Double. If unable, Stand" strategy (e.g. A,7 vs. Dealer 4). If a Hit is such a mathematically sound move to warrant a double down, then how (simply by the fact that you can't double) can it be that you should Stand rather than take the Hit.

You're not hitting to improve the hand, you're doubling to get more $$$ on the table because the dealer is favored to bust. Thus, if you can't double, stand.

GameMaster,
I can balance my check book and thats about it. But I am one of the unfortunate that is approaching 200,000 hands without a Royal. Needless to say, I'm about 4800 in the hole at quarters. Even this amount is high, I know I play at over 100% (deuces wild). I'm beginning to doubt the math. Not that the numbers lie but that they really mean anything. All these percentages on all these full pay games are based on long term numbers which can be about any number it takes to make the perctages work...those are my thoughts here's my question... there's something called "return to equilibrium". Years ago I read that one side will eventully get into the lead ( an even game heads-tails ) and stay there. Does any one ever see this in their sims?

Depending upon the game(s) you're playing, a Royal will appear, on average about once every 40-45,000 hands IF you are utilizing the proper playing strategy. I'll assume you are, so the question remains: will you ever hit one? Well, nothing is 100% sure, but the math says that you're probably going to see one sooner rather than later. My sims show that a player can go a long time without a Royal, but over a 'big' trial (4,000,000 hands or so), the averages come through. I recently played 186,000 hands of dollar VP without a Royal, then hit 3 within 52,000 hands of play. I know it's tough, but all I can say is that the only way you'll ever hit a Royal is to keep playing.

Hi GameMaster,
I'm only 21 old and I'm very interest in Gambling related things, and i really like your web site.....well time for my question! =)

I'm learning your Blackjack lessons (i really like them btw) and i have a little problem in the lesson 8 and 9, i tried to go read the 2 article: "Optimal Wagering" and "Risk of Ruin" but i think that the link you give is broke....i can't reach those article.
Thanks for your help!

Those articles, which were written by other people, have been removed from the Web. I'm sorry, but I don't have copies of them. Glad you've found the lessons helpful.

GameMaster,
I have BJ Flashcards v. 2.5 but I can't seem to get the count to show while I am practicing.
Can you help or refer me to someone who can.

Well, you've got me on this one. My copy of it shows the count when you mark the "Show the Count" box. Assuming that you've done that, I don't know what else to suggest. I'll try to get hold of Graeme, the inventor of the program, but haven't heard from him for 3-4 months.

Hi GameMaster,
I love your site and have learned much about blackjack and video poker from it. I hope to see a book from you soon.
I am currently learning poker (Hold 'Em) and was wondering if you plan to add a poker section to your site or if you have recommendations for good poker sites to check out (I know about twoplustwo.com).

Anyways...keep up the good work. Your writing is the best I've seen on gambling and I've read a lot!
Your site is fantastic!
Later,
Ken Z.

Dear Ken,
Thanks for the kind words. I'd love to add a 'table' poker section, if I had time to play the game more often. But I don't, though I'll keep your request in mind. I don't know of many good poker sites, because I use Wilson Software's "Turbo Poker" as my only training device. I heartily recommend it and do so without any compensation from them. (In fact, I just sent them 25 bucks for the 3.0 version). If any of our readers can recommend a site for Ken, e-mail me and we'll post it.

GameMaster,
A new game named "WAR" has recently showed up at my local casino. It's basically "the higest card wins" or "battle". Do you recommend playing? I've done poorly so far.

War has a house edge of about 2.5%; avoid it.

Also, I'm down $250 (the most I've ever been down) and rent is due soon. How do you suggest I make this up? Aggressively or slowly? I have about $100 left to my name. "WAR" is very tempting because it's such a quick fix, but should I stick to blackjack? Help!

Never go into a casino with $$$ you can't afford to lose.

Also, I've read your roulette tips and I have a question. Suppose I borrow $800 and play roulette. Shouldn't "Martingale's rule" be effective if the house limit is $5000? My original bet would only be $10. Therefore, I could have 6 to 7 chances for my color to hit. The odds would have to be in my favor. Help!

At roulette, bet # 6 would be $320. Are you willing to bet $320 that you don't have to win $10? The odds are NOT in your favor at roulette, ever.

My advice is to stop going to the casino until you've built up a bankroll of risk capital. Then stick to Blackjack.

Hello GameMaster,
Did you know that Harrah's Casino (St. Louis, MO) reduced several of the payouts on their video poker machines? They reduced their 8/5 draw poker machines to 6/5 with only a 20 coin payout for 4 or a kind with one coin bet. They also removed all of their 10/7 double bonus and 10/7 triple bonus machines. On Joker's Wild they reduced the payout for 4 of a kind from 17 to 12. Even Flush Fever was reduced from 9/6 to 8/5. I don't think they want the video poker players anymore. To get a good game now you must go next door to Players. Take a stroll in Harrahs sometime!!!!!
Video poker there is the pits.

Sorry to hear that, but I think they still have All American and the $1 9/6 Jacks with a progressive Royal. I spend most of my time in Players and it looks like it will be even more, now.

HELLO GAMEMASTER,
I'M PLANNING A TRIP TO VEGAS OVER THE NEXT TWO WEEKS ,AND I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY COMMENTS OR SUGGESTIONS CONCERNING SESSION AMOUNTS,BET SPREAD ,WIN GOAL,AND LOSS LIMIT .I HAVE $12,500 AS MY MASTER BANKROLL .I PLAY THE USTON APC, DOUBLE DECK GAMES ONLY, DAS, S17, 65% MIN. PENETRATION . ANY THOUGHTS ?
......THANX

If you can get a 1-8 spread ($25-$200; top out at a true of 6) and find the game you describe, your expectation would be to win about $40 an hour on average. With a $12,500 bankroll, your risk of losing it all (assuming you play 'forever') is about 10%. If you play 48 hours total on your trip and average 75 hands/hour, the trip should yield a result of somewhere between -$11,600 and + $15,500 with a win of $1900 being the mathematical expectation. The risk of losing all $12,500 on the trip is about 1%. There is a 40% probability that you'll be up by $5000 at some point in the trip. This sounds like a weather forecast or a call to Psychic Friends, but it's just a calculation from the Blackjack Risk Manager. I usually carry 15 top bets for a four-hour session; for you that'd be $3000. There's a 1 in 50 chance of losing it all.

Good luck and let me know how you make out.
